Kathy is a dog lover, so it is only natural that her favorite character is Pluto.  Because of this, Kathy and I have been collecting Pluto items for over 30 years.  We have a very large collection and would like to share some of it with you on this page.  We will also share interesting information about Pluto.  Check back often, we will be updating this page regularly.

Here is a little history of Pluto, Mickey's faithful pet dog.

Pluto starred in 48 of his own cartoons, but also appeared along with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck in many of their cartoons. Pluto was created as an actual dog character, with no speaking voice, as opposed to Goofy, who was created as a human character. The dog who would eventually evolve into Pluto made his debut as a bloodhound in the Mickey Mouse cartoon "The Chain Gang" in 1930
Picnic, another Mickey Mouse cartoon from the same year features a pet-dog of Minnie named Rover. The same canine appears as Mickey's pet-dog in the 1931 cartoon Moose Hunt and is named as Pluto for the first time. From then onwards, Pluto has joined the Mickey gang as a permanent character.  (Click here for a list of Pluto's cartoons) His first comics appearance was in the Mickey Mouse daily strips in 1931 two months after the release of the Moose Hunt cartoon. Pluto Saves the Ship, a comic book published in 1942, is one of the first Disney comics prepared for publication outside newspaper strips. However, not counting a few cereal give-away mini-comics in 1947 and 1951, he did not have his own comics title until 1952.

In Pluto's own cartoons, his friends included Fifi the Peke, Dinah the Dachshund, and Ronnie the St. Bernard Puppy. His enemies included Black Pete, Donald Duck, Butch the Bulldog, Figaro the Kitten, Chip 'n Dale, Buzz the Bee, and other characters. In Disney's 1942 animated short Pluto Junior, Pluto has a son who is simply referred to as "Pluto Junior." In the 1946 animated short Pluto's Kid Brother, Pluto has a younger brother named K.B.

Although Pluto does not normally speak, like his anthropomorphized companions, he communicates in a series of dog barks, facial expressions and body movement. The only words Pluto ever spoke, were "Kiss me." [1]

Voice actors that have played Pluto include: Pinto Colvig, Lee Millar, Sr., Clarence Nash, Jimmy MacDonald andBill Farmer (Current)
Pluto even won an Academy Award® for Best Cartoon. Remake of "Mickey's Pal Pluto" (1933)

The Collection

1964 Bayard Pluto France animated had just reconditioned. It works great!  This piece has a lot of sentimental value to us.  Kathy's family all pitched in and bought it for her for her birthday.   Pluto made by the Seiberling Latex Rubber Products Co. He is from the late 1930's to early 1940's. Painted face with great pie eyes. Marked underneath © Walt Disney. He stands 3 3/4" long.  It is very common for the tall to be broken.  We have the broken piece of his tall and will get it fixed.  This piece is in the best shape I have seen.

1938 Porcelain Bisque Pluto Pup by Borgfeldt.  He is 3 ½" sitting.  This Pluto has an interesting story.  Kathy saw him at a Deseret Industries thrift shop.  They were going to hold a silent auction, so Kathy put a low bid on him.  And sure enough we got him.  He has Pluto the Pup molded on his side.

Pluto sketch on back of Howard Johnson’s menu drawn by and autographed by Ralph Kent 10/7/84.  Another great story with this item.  We had a good friend who moved to California to be an actor.  And as most actors he ended up supporting himself by working at the bar located at the Howard Johnson's down the street from Disney Studios in Burbank.  Many of the Disney artists that worked at the studio would come into the bar after work.  Dan made friends with many of these artists.  Through his discussions with Ralph Kent, it came up that Kathy was a big Pluto collector.  When he heard this he sketched this Pluto on the back of a Howard Johnson's place mat.  Needless to say, we were very excited to see it.    Pluto bank 7" looking over shoulder (Leeds)  This is the only bank like this I have seen.  It very much resembles the Leeds Pluto planter with Pluto pulling a cart.  He looks over his shoulder in the same manner. This is a 1970's Remote Control Pluto. It is a wired remote control Pluto that runs on batteries.  He walks and sits.  We purchased him from a shop in Burbank California in the 80's  You should have seen the airport security when we went through the screening.  We all had a laugh after they saw what it was.

Pluto, What were you thinking?

I am sure being a Disney character at Disneyland has got to be a really tough job. Not only are the costumes heavy and hot, there's the small matter of the hundreds of children you have to deal with every single day.  Looks like the kid did something to provoke Pluto.  It is not know what happened, we only see the aftermath.

Now this is the Pluto we all know and love.
